Overview

A large infrastructure conglomerate set up a Smart Industrial Park — the first industrial township of its kind in India — for approximately 150 pharma companies spread across 2,400+ acres. The park delivers quality infrastructure with significant Capex and Opex savings to every member unit.

As part of this ecosystem, a Central Effluent Treatment Plant (CETP) of 12 MLD capacity treats effluent generated by bulk-drug, pharma and chemical units. A 40 km pipeline network handles effluent collection while a 34 km freshwater network supplies water from a 20 MLD Water Treatment Plant. The entire operation runs on a “Pay-As-You-Use” business model — every member unit pays based on actual freshwater consumption and effluent discharge.

The Challenge

Manual operations across a 2,500-acre footprint

The Infra Service Provider had to monitor and control 74 km of pipeline network, maintain pollution-control compliance and manage Pay-As-You-Use billing for 150+ member units — entirely through manual field visits, paper records and manual SAP data entry.

The process was cumbersome and travel-intensive. A dedicated team had to visit each member unit multiple times a day to:

  • Collect manual readings of freshwater and effluent flow meters
  • Operate control valves for the freshwater line and LTDS/HTDS effluent lines based on fixed flow quantities
  • Record data on paper at each location
  • Manually enter the readings into the SAP system
  • Collect LTDS & HTDS effluent samples for quality compliance

The Infra Service Provider needed to eliminate human dependency, establish direct connectivity between the OT (Operational Technology) world and the IT (SAP) world, and fully automate the Pay-As-You-Use service end to end.

Approach

TAS India conducted comprehensive field studies of the freshwater delivery lines, effluent collection infrastructure and the daily manual workflows. Based on these observations, TAS deployed a centralized, on-premise ADVAIT IIoT Platform at the CETP control room with approximately 150 Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) — one per member unit.

Each field RTU interfaces with the flow meters on the freshwater line, LTDS and HTDS effluent lines, the auto sampler, and three shut-off valves at the member unit. RTUs securely transmit data over a cellular GSM network using MQTT to the centralized ADVAIT platform.

System Architecture — ~150 field RTUs connect over a cellular GSM network using MQTT to the ADVAIT IIoT platform at the CETP control room, which is integrated bidirectionally with the SAP system for automated billing, permit issuance and valve control.

How the closed-loop billing works

Data flows from ADVAIT to SAP include daily and monthly freshwater consumption and effluent collection across two quality lines — HTDS (High TDS) and LTDS (Low TDS). SAP automatically generates bills for each member company and tracks payments received. Based on payment status, SAP issues a “Permit” back to ADVAIT to authorize OPEN/CLOSE operations on the shut-off valves at the member unit — creating a fully closed-loop, payment-aware service.

Results & Benefits

ADVAIT’s OT2IT integration replaced all daily manual meter-reading activities, effluent sample collection, shut-off valve operations and manual SAP data entry. It eliminated associated human errors, time delays, and dependency on staff mobility and availability. Automated report generation removed the work of data collation and manual entry, and the elimination of daily staff travel between the control room and 150+ member units delivered substantial fuel savings and improved operational sustainability.
